The historic Holly Theater opened in 1947, after years of vision by Georgia entrepreneur, Randall Holly Brannon. Initially traveling around Georgia presenting movies and showing them at the original Dahlonega high school, Brannon eventually was able to erect the Holly as a permanent theater. With 25 cent shows, air conditioning and dual projectors, the little theater thrived and became a major attraction and gathering spot in the town.
After a decline in the 1960s the theater was used as a church sanctuary, a play house and a bar, only a shade of its former glory. In the 1990s a group of people gathered together to discuss the resurrection of the once treasured landmark. By offering 100 charter memberships to the Holly Theater Community Center, Inc., and through public and private donations, the original Holly board members were able the money needed. On November 6, 1993 the Holly Theater reopened to the public.
The Holly Theater continues to thrive today. Offering an award winning children's drama program, The Holly hosts three children's shows per year, six main stage productions and eight to ten concerts. With all this happening the theater shows no signs of slowed momentum.
In 2008 exciting lists of productions have been planned including: "The Boys Next Door", "How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying", "Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", "Steel Magnolias" and many more.
