North Georgia College & State University was founded in 1873, and remains a vitally important part of life in Dahlonega. The second oldest public institution of higher learning in Georgia, and one of only six senior military colleges in the country, NGCSU was the first co-educational college in the state. In 2006, the U.S. News & World Report ranked NGCSU in the top 20 colleges in the south, as part of America's Best Colleges. Offering a strong tradition of liberal arts and sciences and a vast campus covering 112 acres — home to the nationally-registered, historic Price Memorial Hall whose steeple is coated with Dahlonega gold — North Georgia College & State University continues to play a major role in the heritage of Dahlonega.
